The first rounds of snow and ice are hitting the Pittsburgh region this week and while the cold, sloppy weather may periodically delay our archaeological field work, CDC’s crew is still on the job! ... See MoreSee Less

For those of you may not already know, CDC has been working with the City of Pittsburgh since 2004 and the Westinghouse Park 2nd Century Coalition that formed this year, to help document and preserve the archaeological remains associated with George Westinghouse’s home, Solitude. The property included multiple structures including a tunnel that connected his home to his laboratory where he completed his ground breaking work. Check out this photo slide show from our work in the park over the years, beginning with historic images of Solitude and George’s laboratory. In 2005 CDC completed a preliminary Phase I survey in the park, which included documentation of the remaining original trees from the Solitude’s grounds. We recovered artifacts from the period that the Westinghouse household occupied this site, such as the ceramics and painted stained glass fragments pictured in the slide show. While we were working in the park we had a lot of visitors, including kids from the surrounding neighborhood and even Pittsburgh’s Mayor at the time, Tom Murphy. This past spring CDC completed additional work within the park, including a geophysical survey, to help locate underground metal, foundations and other features that still exist on the property. This information will be used to aid the City and the 2nd Century Coalition in future park management and preservation. The work continues – and we are excitedly anticipating future work with our partners within the park.
Needless to say, considering our history with George Westinghouse’s home and our continuing research into his life and work, we were very excited to see him featured along with his rivals Thomas Edison and Nicola Tesla in a new movie, Current War, about the nineteenth century race for urban electrification. Check out the official movie trailer here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bx3gaLQNwig. Even though we already know George wins the war… we still can’t help but root for him! ... See MoreSee Less
